Reflexology has been practised for thousands of years and is based on the idea that the feet represent a map of the body. Massaging congested, hard, blocked or tense parts of the feet can help improve the function of joints, organs, glands and other aspects of our anatomy and physiology distant from the feet, as well as supporting the function and circulation of the feet themselves. It's also probably the most relaxing treatment I know.
How it's applied
Reflexology is received either in a reclining chair or another comfortable position. A natural heating, cooling or neutral balm is used to help massage the feet. Pressure can be firm or light as appropriate to the individual.
I use a combination of a fairly vigorous Chinese style of reflexology for stimulation and working stiff blocked areas, and precision reflexology which includes more subtle rebalancing pressure. The Chinese style of reflexology is also what is used in Thailand, sometimes in combination with Thai massage. In China, Thailand and throughout South East Asia reflexology and foot massage is often used to provide a relaxing tonic and energy boost; but it can also be used to address common ailments and stress related conditions.
Where and when
I'm available from 8 am to 8 pm on most weekdays and some Saturday mornings. I practice reflexology in Totnes from OLA Chiropractic Centre, 5a , Fore Street, Totnes ( Google Maps here) Home visits through my mobile service are possible for an extra charge for time and petrol.
Booking your first session
If you would like to discuss your needs in advance or book in please call 07915 650106 or e mail. Unless you already feel clear about what you want a 1 hour session is the best place to start with reflexology. If you follow a series of sessions then shorter sessions are also possible. At your first session we will discuss your relevant medical history and anything you would like to address through reflexology - there is no charge for this discussion - just allow an extra 10-15 minutes or so for the first session. Please note, once a session has been booked I need 24 hours notice of cancellation or the session will have to be paid for.
Further information and FAQ’S
Reflexology and natural health and Western medicine
Reflexology is holistic in approach and aims to support and enhance the natural healing and self-rejuvenating capacities of body and mind. Much illness, disease and body pain is caused by the effects of stress and lifestyle issues on our minds and bodies. Reflexology can help with some of this. In addition, if you have an illness, disease or problem being treated by Western medicine on the whole there is no containdication to receive reflexology at the same time - the two should be mutually supportive. In general if you are being treated by a Western doctor it's a good idea to get their advice/permission regarding receiving reflexology.
Reflexology for health maintainence and as a preventive
For a general boost of health and vitality, three to six treatments fairly close together can be very beneficial. In China for example, they sometimes have an approach of a shorter treatment everyday for ten days to shift a problem - this type of approach is possible with shorter less expensive treatments. Otherwise, in general as a health support, then reflexology every two, four or six weeks will help; but any regularity of reflexology, even if it is every two or three months, will make a difference. You can of course have a one off treatment to relax and rejuvenate anytime or just to try it out.
When is it time to go to the doctor or another health professional?
If you are in acute or unusual pain, reflexology is not the place to start and a visit to your doctor would be more appropriate to get a more in depth diagnosis.
